Anselm Gurney, General Manager of the Leisure Centre, commented, “The centre is definitely a lot busier, so much so that we have had to expand the car park to cope with the number of customers. This increase in usage reflects our brand of ‘Everyone Active’ and demonstrates that we are being successful in encouraging more people to become more active more often.”
Cllr Diana Kearsley, portfolio holder for Community Services said: “Mid Suffolk District Council and SLM have been working together to ensure that as many people as possible benefit from the Leisure Centre and the excellent activities it offers. The centre is open all year round and offers a range of activities for all the family – and is a real asset to our District. If you haven’t yet ventured to it, then I would encourage anyone to do so”
Mid Suffolk District Council opted into the free swimming for under 16s and over 60s that was offered by the Government in 2009/10 and this brought in more than 50,000 extra swimmers per year. Unfortunately this initiative is coming to end on 31st July when government funding is being withdrawn due to the current economic circumstances. However there is some good news as anyone enrolled on a swimming lesson programme at Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre will still be entitled to free swimming in casual sessions.
The centre has also expanded its climbing wall so that it now has a new dedicated bouldering wall, as well as the lead wall and a traverse wall which has led to a big increase in the number of people climbing.
Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre has also recently been informed that it is in the final of the FLAME Awards for Leisure Centre of the Year. Only five sites have made it this far in a national competition to determine the best leisure centre in the whole country. The final decision will be made at an awards ceremony in mid July.
Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre is managed by SLM on behalf of Mid Suffolk District Council.
