On a warm sunny morning in July twelve Everyone Active athletes lined up for what was to be a brilliant day of challenges and tests of endurance to find out who would become the Enderby Superstar champion.
On the start line was:
Linda Scott, Dave Farren, Katie Walker, Neil Putnam, Louise Wright,
Rob Rooney, Emma March, Barry Summers, James Ellison, Sima Maxim, Stephen Snow and Dave Speight.
The day got off to a calm and easy start with a golf challenge, then came the Welly Wanging event and who would have thought that this could be such an extreme sport, a nail was broken! A referee was nearly taken out with a side wanging welly and an athlete took a heavy dive to the floor in pursuit of glory.
The day then moved up a gear as the team spilt in two to test out their skills in a Table Tennis tournament and a punishing 1000 meter sprint on a rowing machine followed by how many squat thrusts in a minute , press-ups in a minute and sit-ups in a minute they could do.
Lots of gritted teeth in this event and the victor one of the girls brilliant.
Some fast rowing times were set the best 3min 10 secs, which nearly took this athlete out of the competition until we revived him with Lucozade and a Mars bar. Crisis averted phew!!
Next came a 1.8 mile run just seconds between first and second place, exciting stuff.
A well-earned lunch and then on with the afternoon.
Badminton tournament kicked off the afternoon events, time to let lunch go down before we were off to the pool for a 50 metre sprint event
Good times were set by all the athletes here; the winning time was 35sec he was motoring and we all felt the wave effect!
Basketball was next just a little hiccup when one of the athletes ball wouldn’t go in the net, had a little strop (no names!!) went in eventually so all good.
It was all out for glory in the football penalty shoot-out.
Then the last event of the day the dreaded Bleep Test, legs were tired but superstar determination got them all through, level thirteen reached by the winner brilliant.
Up to the golf bar, pint of beer and the medal presentation
Gold Medal winner: Rob Rooney
Silver Medal winner: James Ellison
Bronze Medal winner: Linda Scott
Over six hundred raised for the Glenfield Project a charity for youngsters with learning difficulties, superb.
What a Fantastic day, thank-you to all who took part, all who sponsored the athletes, and a special thanks to Philip smith co referee and Kevin Deegan who had the original idea, and Enderby LC for letting us host it all there.
See you next year!!
