Climbing Wall Brief

Our unique climbing wall, built by Rockworks in their RealForm system, has been hand sculpted to capture the curvature and complexities of natural rock. Sculpted by a team of expert craftsmen and climbers, it includes an extensive variety of detailed climbing features including flakes, pockets, grooves, horizontal & vertical cracks, tufas, and bulges mimicking a wide variety of natural rock types.

Together with the bolted on holds, these provide a challenging and ideal climbing surface for all climbers from novices to elite performers.
The 12.5m high wall consists of 2 Slabs, 2 Overhangs (1.7m & 1.2m), and 3 just over neutral. All 7 walls are fitted with in situ top ropes, and are also fully bolted for leading. (When leading, you will need to supply your own suitably rated dynamic rope, and quickdraws.)

All climbers must have filled in a disclaimer before entering the climbing room.
Spectators are not allowed into the climbing room, however, there are panoramic glass viewing windows on the both the upper floors, allowing an up close view of a climb, right up to the top.

To use the wall unsupervised, experienced climbers must be able to correctly fit a harness, tie in with a suitable knot, and belay safely.
All junior climbers under 16 must wear helmets the entire time whilst in the climbing room.

A selection of equipment is available for hire, this includes: harnesses, belay devices, ground anchors, and helmets.

How to get started for Adults (18+)

We recommend our Beginners Course or Induction as the ideal way to start climbing. These sessions cover how to use a variety of equipment, and also aim to make you aware of the safety issues involved at an indoor wall. No previous experience is necessary, and we supply all the equipment needed for these sessions.

The Induction is a 2 hour session covering the basics of indoor climbing. During the session we teach you how to fit a harness, tie the rope to your harness, and how to safely hold the rope for another climber. There is also lots of climbing, both with and without the ropes.

For a more in-depth introduction to climbing, we also have the Beginners Course. This 6 hour course is broken into three sessions, allowing us to give you more information and additional skills, at a slower pace. During the course we teach you the Induction syllabus, and then we cover more knots, extra equipment, and introduce climbing techniques and abseiling, with time to practice it all.

After completing the Beginners Course, or Induction we don’t just leave you to fend for yourselves.
We have a twice-weekly Adult Club where you can practice your new found skills, under close supervision by an instructor. The club also provides a pleasant social atmosphere in which to climb and meet other climbers.

If that all sounds a little daunting, we also have a Taster session available. An hour long session, designed to give you a taste of the thrill of climbing. We look after all the technical side, so you can get on the wall as fast as possible.

How to get started for Juniors (8 - 18)

Juniors can only climb whilst supervised by a competent climber, or during a junior session.

Juniors under 16 must wear helmets at all times whilst in the climbing room.

The best way to start climbing is with our twice-weekly Junior Club and Junior+ Club sessions.
Junior Club is for 8 - 12 year olds, and is 1.5 hours. Junior+ Club is for 10 - 18 year olds, and is 2 hours. During your first visit, you need to attend the full session, and you’ll be taught the basics of using the equipment. After your first visit, the sessions are drop in sessions. During the club you can come and just climb, or you can follow our highly acclaimed award scheme.
The award scheme is designed to cover a huge breadth of climbing skills, knowledge, equipment, and advanced techniques in a fun, nurturing and progressive manner.

Experienced Climbers

Experienced climbers must be able to correctly fit a harness, tie in with suitable knot, and belay safely, being able to hold a fall, and lower appropriately. You may use the wall unsupervised after completing a disclaimer.

For those looking to increase their knowledge or learn additional skills, we have a Leading Course and an Advanced Course.

The Leading Course is a 6 hour course split over two sessions. During the course you will learn how to lead climb on an indoor wall, and how to safely belay for a lead climber, all under the watchful eye of a qualified instructor. You’ll also cover the dangers involved, be made aware of common mistakes people make, and advised how to avoid them.

The Advanced Course is designed to teach advanced theory and skills, to help you get the most out of climbing and to help prepare you for climbing outdoors. Covering setting up belay stances using multiple anchor systems, setting up releasable abseils, fall factors, advanced climbing moves, concepts for Sport climbing, and touching on Traditional Climbing.

Clothing Guidelines and Recommendations.

For your lower half, we recommend loose fitting but not baggy tracksuit bottoms, or similar to aid comfort and flexibility. Jeans are not recommended.

For your upper half, we recommend short sleeved t-shirts, long enough to cover your waist to help keep you cool and stop the harness from cutting in to you.

For your hair, we recommend that long hair is tied back, and ponytails are tied low down to prevent hair getting caught in belay devices.

We recommend you remove any jewellery you may be wearing. Rings, watches, necklaces, and large earrings (hoop earrings and similar) can injure you, and may get damaged.

All loose items that could fall out, should be removed from your pockets.
