Essex Aikido Dojo (Shoshinkan)

Tomiki Style Aikido is one of the major branches of modern Aikido, first developed by Kenji Tomiki, a direct student of Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido and Jigoro Kano the founder of Judo

Aikido is an excelent form of both physical and mental exercise. it is considered a soft art because of the lack of kicks and punches. Aikido is ideal for just about everyone, from teens to grandparents; it is especially attractive to women because it does not require the tremendous amount of strength required by other martial arts.

Community & Corporate Partnerships

About The Basildon Sporting Village. The Basildon Sporting Village opened in April 2011 and is the best public sports facility in Essex. The centre offers residents from Basildon and across the county a 50-metre competition swimming pool with a viewing area for 405 people; an eight-court sports hall with retractable seating for 480 people; a fully-equipped gymnastics centre; multi-purpose studios; a health and fitness suite, crèche and café; a climbing wall; floodlit five-a-side football pitches, and an athletics grandstand with seating for 720 people.

The sporting village is an official training camp for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games with approved facilities for athletics, swimming, fencing, Judo, gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, boccia and goalball. Located in the 100-hectare Gloucester Park, the facility will also cater for regional swimming, gymnastics, athletics, badminton and netball squads.

The project is a joint public and private partnership scheme between Basildon Borough Council and Community Solutions for Leisure (Basildon) Ltd, which is a subsidiary of Morgan Sindall Investments Limited. Construction work was carried out by Morgan Sindall plc and the facility is operated by SLM Ltd under their banner ‘Everyone Active’. This project is testament to the success of Local Authorities working together in partnership with the private sector to produce such a significant project.

Funding for the project was led by Basildon Borough Council and Basildon Renaissance Partnership and was supported by funding from Essex County Council, the East of England Development Agency, the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), Sport England and the Veolia ES Cleanaway Pitsea Marshes Trust.

The development of Basildon Sporting Village was a venture funded by many strategic partners, they include:

Lisa Hawker

Lisa Hawker is the artist that produced the wonderful 'Catalyst' artwork you can see behind reception. A metal and ceramic artwork, 'Catalyst', created especially for the new Basildon Sporting Village by artist Lisa Hawker. Hundreds of local people were involved, transferring their own motivational words into clay, inspired by 'being active' with the help of the artist's team, in creative workshops as part of the opening of the Basildon Heritage Trail and Basildon Festival in 2009.
