Plymouth University Student and Staff Free Swimming Sessions

These sessions take place on Mondays 6pm-7:30pm, Wednesdays 1pm-2:30pm, Thursdays 7pm-8:30pm, Fridays 5:30pm-7pm and Sundays 7pm-8:30pm.

Students and Staff must have proof of Identification with them to gain free access.

Kids Activities

All our activities are taught by fully qualified coaches who bring fun and enjoyment to their sports.  We are working with partner National Governing Bodies to ensure all sessions work towards national plans of sport and that we are able to spot talent and that there are exit routes where possible if children want to take their sport further.

Mini Activities (Under 5's)

Gymnastics and Trampoline Various times (parent & toddler or courses) from £4.75 p/session

Throughout the week there are a number of sessions available for everyone to enjoy gymnastics and trampolining. There are a number of ways you can join in these sports. We offer courses for children ages 3+ which encourage growth and development in key skills such as balance, flexibility and agility. The children can start picking up the basic skills which are used in many sports and work towards British Gymnastics badges*.

Another session we offer is parent & toddler sessions. These are aimed at under 3's and require the parents to stay with their children in the sports hall to take part where necessary. During these sessions the children can work towards British Gymnastics FUNdemental awards* whilst having fun with all the equipment and parachute.

Finally if you want to try gymnastics and trampolining and don't want to commit, try out our pay as you go sessions. During this time the emphasis is on the parent to engage the children and take part in the activities. A coach will be present during the session and will ensure all activities are safe but this is a great time for parents to get involved.

*Please note: Any badges and certificates awarded are a seperate cost of £2.20 which can be bought from reception.

Mini Dribblers Tuesday 10am & Sunday 9am (3-5 years) £4.75 p/session (term time only)

For all you budding footballers out there this is a great pre-school course for you. FA qualified staff will take you through a number of fun games and drills which will work on your dribbling, shooting and passing. With specially adapted balls used so they are not too big and coaches who are great with kids this session will help move you onto the next stage in your footballing career.

Pebbles Climbing Tuesday & Thursday 4.30pm & Saturday 11.00am (4-7 years) £9.65 p/session

For our youngest climbers this session is just for fun in a small supervised group. Each Pebbles sessions lasts 1 hour and the children are provided with full body harnesses and helmets. We ask that parents remain in the viewing area for the duration of the session, just in case there are any wobbles!

Creche Monday - Friday 9.00am- 1.00pm £2.65 p/hour

Although not technically an activity, there is no excuse for you not getting active in the morning with the creche available for your little ones. Drop in at anytime to meet the staff and sign your child up to become and Everyone Active member - this will make it quicker to get going on your first visit. The staff are friendly and happy to answer any questions or queries you may have.

Junior Activities (6-16yrs)

For those slightly older customers who want to try out our trampolines this course is for you. Trampolining is an enjoyable way to get and keep fit and there are plenty of challenges to keep you busy. You will be working towards British Gymnastics awards and there is no better way to have some fun with your friends.

Squash

Squash Monday 3.45pm Beginners, 4.30pm Advanced from £3.20 p/session (term time only)

For any juniors interested in squash there is plenty to get involved in at the Life Centre with sessions run with our partners the England Squash and Racketball Association. On Mondays during term time we run courses which will develop players within the sport over a period of time building them up to be better players and working on all skills needed for the game.

Teen IM Basketball Tuesday 4.30pm (11-16 years) £3.20 p/session Starting Tuesday 22nd April 2014

IM Basketball is a casual pay and play session involving 2v2 and 3v3 games as well as full matches. This session is endorsed by England Basketball and is suitable for males and females who want to particiapate in a bit of fun basketball but don't necessarily have enough people to play with.

Morning Run Wednesday 9.00am* and Thursday 7.00am £2.00 p/session (14+) Starting Wednesday 23rd April 2014 and Thursday 24th April 2014

Have a pre-work/school run in a relaxed friendly atmosphere. This outdoor running session is suitable for any ability with various distances available. You will work to your own ability and there will be interval ad sprint work involved for those who want to push themselves a bit further.

Teen Box Thursday 4.30pm £3.20 p/session Starting Thursday 24th April 2014

Another great fitness session based on the techniques of boxing, you will not be sparring or contact boxing but will learn boxing techniques and get fit whilst doing so. This session is endorsed by England Boxing to introduce you to the sport but concentrate on technique rather than power.

Mini Tennis Sunday 11:00-12:00 £4.75 per session (5-8 years) 

Participants will learn to serve, rally and score, as well as learning the movement and co-ordination skills needed for tennis. Players are encouraged to play fun competitions in teams and as individuals, with short matches using tie-break scoring.

Junior Rock Club Tuesday Beginner, Tuesday Teens (13+ years) Thrusday Intermediate, Friday Advanced, 5.30pm Saturday & Sunday Mixed Ability, 9.00am £12.20 p/session (term time)

These courses are where we start to teach children how to climb and belay. We operate a log book scheme as part of te sessions whihc is a progressive learning programme and encourages each child to keep extending their skills by regular review and sign off. 

The Teen Rock Club is suitable for beginners, who will complete our junior beginner course during their first 5 sessions, and has a more adult theme. Instructors are able to push on with the training and, where appropriate, start introducing more advanced climbing and coaching skills. For those interested we will also introduce competition climbing to the sessions.  

Pebbles Climbing Tuesday & Thursday 4.30pm & Saturday 11.00am (4-7 years) £9.65 p/session

Street Dance Tuesday 4:30pm (8-12yrs) £4.75 p/session (term time only)

Learn the basic moves of street dance with our dance instructors who will have you moving to routines in no time ready to wow your friends the next time a piece of music comes on! You will also have the chance to showcase your new routines to your friends family each term.

Taekwondo Tuesday 6.00pm (5+) (externally run)

Kids Athletics

Karate Tuesday 7.00pm (all ages) (externally run)

Netball Wednesday 6.00pm (12-16 years) (externally run)

Plymouth Pilgrims Netball Club have their junior sessions held at the Life Centre. If you are a keen netballer and want to join a team then contact the club www.plymouthpilgrims.co.uk or Sue on 07717 222 490.

Junior Climbing Squad Wednesday 5.30pm (7+ years) (invite only)

To join the high Sports Squad, juniors need only have a real enthusiasm for climbing, a moderate ability for thier age and a mature attitude towards training. We believe 2 climbing sessions per week are a minimum for continued athletic improvement, therefore, in addition to a weekly squad session, Squash members are expected to also attend at least one Junior Rock Club session per week.

Table Tennis Thursday 6.00pm (family) 8.00pm (adult)

Kids Table Tennis

Our partners the English Table Tennis Association have a night available for people to come and try out the sport and get involved. Come along and find out is the sport is right for you and speak to Mike the coach about what other opportunities there are to get involved in the sport. The family session is a chance to engage with your children and play a sport together whereas the adult session is child free zone if you need to escape for a little bit. 

Bowls Thursday 4.30pm (7-11 years) 5.30pm (12-16 years) from £2.40 p/session

Bowls is a great activity for all youngsters and offers a new sport to try out. We are currently working at setting up a junior club and league also some junior sessions and activities so if you are interested please contact the life centre and leave your details or emailplymlifecentre@slm-ltd.co.uk.

Junior Badminton Club Friday 4.30pm (7-16 years)

Kids Table Tennis

Our hugely popular junior badminton club has come over from the Mayflower centre with its team of coaches and is continuing to grow. The session is there for any junior to come and play badminton and the opportunities are there to progress and be coached by qualified staff.

Working in partnership with Badminton England, we are looking to build on the existing club and become an accredited club which will be the first junior one of its kind in the area. We will also be looking to expand the session and what is on offer by producing development sessions for committed players who want to get on in the sport and start playing competitive games and fixtures.

This is a very exciting time for the club and we are also looking to develop young coaches through the system to ensure the kids taking part get the most out of what Badminton has to offer.

Hi 5 Netball Friday 6.00pm (9-12 years) £4.75 p/session (term time only)

Kids Athletics

Hi 5 Netball is an initiative set up by our partners England Netball to encourage younger players into the game. This course uses adapted equipment to ensure players are able to master the throwing, shooting, defending and dodging side of the game before they progress into the full game.

Youth Night Friday 7.00pm (11-17 years) £3.20 p/session

Youth night activities vary from week to week and incorporate various different activities for the participants to try out. There is always some form of swimming, diving, climbing, gym and dance available with activities in the sports hall ranging from trampolining, football, badminton, athletics, tabl-e tennis and guest appearances of activities such as parc cour.

These sessions last 2 hours and are great value for money. With the support from the Plymouth City Council's Youth Workers and Police Community Support Officers, the programme is a truely multi agency approach to getting kids off the street and involved in a more constructive activity. Underwater Hockey Saturday 3.00pm (9-16 years) 1st session free, £4 p/session (externally run)

If you want to try a new sport then Plymouth Underwater Hockey Club run a junior session every Saturday. Beginners will only take part in the first hour (just £2) then once competent stay for the full 2 hour session. Roller Disco Saturday 6.30pm (all ages), Sunday 4.30pm (families) from £4.50 (externally run)

Here's something new for the whole family to enjoy. We are working with Sk8house to bring to you a weekly roller disco which looks to be the biggest skating area in Europe. There are over 200 pairs of skates available from child size 9 to an adult size 11 and plenty of helmets and pads are available if you are worried about falling over.

Fit For Sport is UK’s leading healthy lifestyle activities provider and has been delivering Ofsted registered Kids Camps for over 20 years. Kids camps run every school holiday.

Rock Climbing Half Day Fun 2.5 hours for ages 7+ years £22.50 per person

An exciting opportunity to try out all of the facilities here at Plymouth High Sports. You will have a chance to test your climbing skills in the bouldering room, check out the top-ropes on our beginner wall, the granite wall (modelled on the famous Dartmoor Tors) and the ultimate challenge of our 16 meter wall: and challenge yourself on our Aerial Assulat Course. All under the close supervison of one of our experienced instructors.

Climbing Taster Sessions 1 hour sessions for ages 7+ years £11.85 per person

A first hand experience of indoor rock climbing. Come along and have a try at top-roping and bouldering under the supervison of one of our instructors.

Pebbles Taster Sesion 1 hour sessions for ages 4-6 years £11.85 per person

A chance for the little ones to have a try in a special session designed just for them. They will try out climbing in the boulder room and on our top-ropes, and also learn a little about looking after each other in the climbing wall.

ROCKstart 1.5 hour sessions for ages 16+ years £21.00 per person

Learn the skills needed to become an independant indoor climber. Ideal if you have had a go this holiday adn want more. Our instructors will work towards teaching you the skills you need to pass our safety test and register as an unsupervised user.

Easter Egg Hunt 2 hour sessions for ages 4-7 years £15.00 per person

Grab your map, grab your team adn grab your instructor. Hidden aroung the wall is a treasure trove of Easter Eggs*. Working as a team to collect as many as they can, one of our instructors will guide them through the hunt and teach them the skills they need to climb the highest walls andfind the biggest eggs.

No Strings Badminton Monday 10.00am (Adults Only) , Wednesday 7.00pm and 8.00pm (16+ years)Kids Table Tennis

Working in partnership with Badminton England we currently run these 3 franchised sessions in order to increase participation in the sport. You do not need to have a partner to play, simply come along and join in the sessions where our    co-ordinator will organise some sessions for you. A fun light hearted session ideal for those who want to play and enjoy the sociable side of badminton.

Back to Badminton Essentials Course Wednesday 4th June 6.00pm (£40 for 8 week course)

This is a  week coached course for beginners or players looking improve their game. You will learn new skills and techniques whilst improving confidence adn meeting like minded people in a relaxed, social enviroment.

Ping Pong  Tuesday 2.00pm (50+ session)

Inspired by the film 'PING PONG - Never too old for gold' which follows some competitors on their trip to China for the over 80's Table Tennis CHampionships, this is a Table Tennis session suitable for all abilities. Everyone can get involved even if you don't think you can our activator will be able to adapt the game to help or set up a mini competition for those who are keen and competitive. Wheelchair users and frail customers are also welcome to come and give it a go.

Tai Chi - Wednesday at 4.30pm (16+) £3.60 p/session (Free for GX members)

Tai Chi is a relaxing form of exercise available to all abilities which is also known to calm the mind and leave you feeling refreshed.

Buggy Fit Wednesday 9.30am £3.50 p/session (including hot drink) Starting Wednesday 23rd April 2014

If you want to get fit but struggle to find childcare, this is an ideal session for you. A power walk outside around the park pushing your buggy to incorporate gentle exercise. Get fit with your child this is a very sociable sesion and even includes a cup of tea for afterwards.  Suitable for mums and babies 6weeks+*

*8 weeks for mums that have had a Caesarean Section

Life Centre Badminton Club (formally Mayflower Club)  Wednesday 7.00pm (16+ years)

Our resident Badminton Club play every week and offer opportunities to play some competitive games of badminton. Linked to our Friday Junior Club, the Wednesday session is for adults and is a welcoming environment for anyone who wants to take badminon a little further. Beginner Bowls Course Starting Wednesday 7th May 2014 7.00pm (£13.80 for 4 Week Course)

Bowling is for everyone, young, middle aged and older people and suitable to play at any level or ability. Why not try the course and see for yourself. This coached course will help you get started and improve your game.

Squash Club Evening Wednesday 7.30pm (16+ years) £4.20 p/session

The evening is open to all adults that already play or would like to get involved in the game. Come along and meet new players, find out about the leagues adn have a go at some games and drills. you dont need a partner or equipment and an activator will tell you all you need to know.

Bounce Fit Thursday 9.30am (16+ years) £4.60 p/session Starting Thursday 24th April 2014

This is a great new session comig to the LIfe Centre which meas adults can have a go on the trampolines and enjoy a bounce whilst getting fit and having fun in a relaxed and sociable atmosphere. The session will concentrate on exercices and movements which are easy to master and work on yoru core such as stomache, arms and legs. No experience needed.

Table Tennis Thursday 6.00pm (family) 8.00pm (adult) Kids Table Tennis(externally run)

Our partners the English Table Tennis Association have a night available for people to come and try out the sport and get invovled. Come along and find out is the sport is right for you and speak to Mike the coach about what other opportunities there are to get invoveld in the sport. The family session is a chance to engage with your children and play a sport together whereas the adult session is child free zone if you need to escape for a little bit.

Movement to Music Thursday 1.30pm (60+)

Classes are designed for the over 60's and the less able so they can continue to experience and enjoy the benefits of gentle movement to music. The group often head for a drink together afterwards and so this is a very social session to be invoveld in.

Squash Coaching Thursday 6.00pm (16+ years) £4.20 p/session

The relatively new game of racketball is being developed at the Life Centre in partnership with the England Squash and Racketball Association. This session allows you to learn both Squash and Racketball, the activity leader will arrange games and activities to help you imporve and learn new skills in a non threatening environment.

Ladies Box Friday 6.00pm (16+ years) £3.20 p/session Starting Friday 2nd May 2014

Another great fitness session based on the techniques of boxing without contact. Learn the basics whilst getting fit this session is endorsed by England Boxing. to introduce you to the sport but concentrate on technique rather than power. The ladies session will no doubt be sociable and great fun so get involved.

Athlefit Friday 9.30am (16+ years) £3.10 p/session (Free for GX members)

Taking the origional Olympian disciplines of running, jumping and throwing, this session offers the opportunity to experience a fitness session that is both different and unique. Here you get the opportunity to undertake activities that will help you lead a healthier life and also suppliment any other activitiy and sport you already play by building your core strength. Your level of fitness is unimportant as sessions are planned for all abilities and it may either remind you of childhood joys of school or introduce you into something you may never have tried before.

Back to Netball Friday 7.00pm (16+ years) £3.75 p/session

This session is ideal for those who may have played netball at a younger age and now want to get back into the sport. Working alongside our England Netball partners, this session is run to encourage more older people into the sport and the coach will help everyone develop their passion for the game. There are exit routes into clubs if you so wish or if you just want to keep it casual feel free to continue with these sessions. 

Bowls Various sessions all days from £3.45

Bowls is a great sociable sport to get into and there is a thriving club here waiting to help you out with the game. A highly strategic game, this is suitable for all ages and abilities so there is a session for you. Badminton Social Tournament Sunday 1st June 2014 £6.25 p/person per competition

If you enjoy playing Badminton socially but fancy a bit of competition, come and take part in our Badminton Social Tournament. This is aimed at casula players who want to have a bit of fun against other players of similar abilities.

We will be holding a range of tournaments: Mixed doubles, Mens singles and doubles, Womens singles and doubles and 50+ Mens, Womens and Mixed doubles.

Rockstart Tuesday & Thursday 7.30pm (16+) £20.00

If you have never climbed before and want to see if you like it, or if you just want to 'give it a go', then this session with an instructor is ideal. This is a 1.5 hr sessipon with all equipment provided. This also starts to teach you the skills to progress to becoming a competent climber.

Seniors Activities

On top of the usual Adult Activities, below you can find some information regarding sessions we run which are suitable for those aged 50+...

No Strings Badminton - Monday 10amKids Table Tennis (16+) £3.20 p/session

Come and enjoy a game of badminton with or without a partner. A qualified coach will be on hand to organise the session to help you improve your technique and skill.

(Other sessions for 16yrs + are available on Wednesday at 7pm & 8pm) 

Ping Pong  Tuesday 2.00pm (50+ session)

Inspired by the film 'PING PONG - Never too old for gold' which follows some competitors on their trip to China for the over 80's Table Tennis CHampionships, this is a Table Tennis session suitable for all abilities. Everyone can get involved even if you don't think you can our activator will be able to adapt the game to help or set up a mini competition for those who are keen and competitive. Wheelchair users and frail customers are also welcome to come and give it a go.

Tai Chi - Wednesday 4.30pm (16+) £3.60 p/session

Tai Chi is a relaxing form of exercise available to all abilities which is also known to calm the mind and leave you feeling refreshed.

Although this session is not aimed specifically towards senior members, we welcome you to come along and try your hand at this strategic, yet fun, sport. If you really want a challenge, you can try and beat our 'Robo-pong' Machine!! 

Mayflower Wheelchair Dancers Wednesday 2pm-5pm

If you use a wheelchair why not try dancing in it. Manual or Powered chairs can be used either self driven or pushed. To get involved contact 01822 615034 (afternoons only)
