Basics Athletics is one of the oldest sports, featuring in the ancient Olympics. There are four main strands to the Athletics competition: track events, such as the 100m; field events, which include the High Jump and the Shot Put; combined events such as the Decathlon, a mix of track and field elements; and road events, including the Marathon. Rules Athletics rules are relatively simple, the winners are those who complete the course in the shortest time, throw or jump the furthest distance. All competitors must start at the same point and cover the same distance over a pre-determined course. Benefits Each event has its own set of fitness demands and benefits. Running events help to develop cardiovascular fitness while throwing and jumping events develop explosive power. Winter training will involve circuit training which will increase all-round fitness and tone the whole body. Getting started Everyone Active offers a number of athletics facilities at the leisure centres it operates around the UK.
