With recent British cycling success on both track and road racing there is little surprise that cycling is now more popular than ever. There are four different cycling disciplines – all of which can be performed at an amateur level and progress to more advanced levels - BMX, road, track and mountain biking. Each type of cycling offers a slightly different technical challenge. Road cycling and mountain biking are most commonly performed as fitness activities, and are ideal for beginners; all you need is your bike and a helmet.
Cycling is excellent for improving fitness and toning up the lower body. It’s a non-impact activity, which means it places no stress on the joints of the knee, ankle or back. This can make it a good option for people that are restricted from other forms of exercise because of problems in these areas.
All Everyone Active run gyms offer indoor bikes for cycling as part of a fitness programme. Some of our centres also offer Watt Bikes which offer a more detailed analysis of how a person is cycling and is the closest you can get to road cycling indoors. There are hundreds of miles of dedicated cycling routes throughout the country, ranging from wide tarmac paths to challenging off-road sections. Check out www.sustrans.org.uk to search for routes in your area.
