Martial arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practices, which are practiced for a variety of reasons: self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, entertainment, as well as mental, physical, and spiritual development.
Popularised by many Hollywood films, martial arts cover a wide variety of skills and include combat and non-combat sports. The list of martial arts is vast but includes Taekwondo, Tang soo do, Judo, Karate, T’ai chi, Aikido and Kendo.
Martial arts training aims to result in several benefits to the trainees such as their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Through regular practice in the chosen martial art, physical fitness may be boosted as the whole body is exercised and the entire muscular system is activated. Martial arts can also help with self-esteem and self-control.
