What is Energise?
Energise exercise classes are designed specifically for individuals who have been affected by cancer and whose quality of life can be maintained or improved through taking part in regular, supervised exercise classes with cancer rehab specific qualified fitness instructors.
Energise is a partnership between Macmillan Cancer Support, North Bristol NHS Trust, Everyone Active and Bristol City Council.
Catherine Neck, Macmillan Cancer Rehabilitation Lead commented:
‘The Energise programmes offer a great opportunity for cancer patients to return to physical activity. People often don’t know where to start or what they can do safely and these programmes provide help with these aspects in an informal, unthreatening environment.’
Who is the scheme for?
Energise exercise classes are open to anyone who is pre- treatment, undergoing or post treatment for cancer.
We take referrals from a medical professional (Cancer Nurse Specialist, GP, Consultants, Practice Nurse, Physiotherapists) and self-referrals (in some cases, with the patients permission we may need to contact GP or medical professional).
We undertake blood pressure, heart rate and other base-line checks and have other medical conditions inclusion/exclusion criteria which can be found on the link to the Energise information leaflet.
What happens at the Energise exercise classes?
The programme is partly based in the gym, using the equipment available eg bikes, treadmills, rowing machines, as well as a circuit programme in the studio. Each participant is given a personalised individual programme, including a mixture of aerobic and resistance exercise.
All programmes are designed to be a stepping stone back to physical activity, to be informal and fun.
Where are the classes run and at what cost?
Tuesday 15:00 – 16:00, Everyone Active Stadium Clevedon, Run by Kate Oldham, £2
