Many of our centres across the country run exercise referral schemes, which are designed to help people with long-term health problems use our centres to get more active, thereby helping to improve their physical – and mental – wellbeing.
Participants are referred to the programme by their GP or another healthcare professional to seek non-pharmaceutical methods of treating long-term ailments
These programmes are generally run over a two- to three month period and are specifically designed for people who suffer from conditions that either make it difficult for them to get active or, for whom activity would help their circumstances and their health. Among the conditions that are eligible include diabetes, asthma, arthritis, depression, anxiety, osteoporosis, high blood pressure and for those who are overweight or obese.
All those who are referred to the scheme are given a bespoke exercise regime designed to meet their needs, so, for example, if someone is suffering with arthritis, then they’ll be given an exercise regime that focusses on low-impact work outs to save too much shock going through joints. This includes exercises like cycling and swimming.
The exercise referral scheme is also designed to help with rehabilitation for patients who have been suffering with serious conditions including cancer, cardiac problems, respiratory conditions, Parkinson’s disease and MS. Again, we develop bespoke, specialised exercise regimes to ensure that every patient gets the most out of their treatment with us.
