Self-Care

Look after yourself, because if you don’t, no one else is going to.

Why wait for someone else to look after you, or a special occasion to treat yourself?

Self-care:

  • Are you looking after yourself?
  • Are you being kind to yourself?
  • Are you taking time for yourself?
  • Are you doing things that you enjoy?

Self-care is an essential element of your overall wellness. It’s the way in which you look after yourself: the things you do for yourself.

Self-care helps you to become more focused on who you are, what you want and how to achieve your best life.  When you indulge in self-care, you are more refreshed and in tune with your body, mind, spirit and surroundings, and you’ll find it easier to face life.

The way you look after yourself sets a standard for yourself which shows you that you are worthy. It improves your self-esteem and confidence and it sets standards for how you expect other people to treat you. It also improves your mental state, helps you to stay positive, relaxed, calm and proactive, and it’s just blummin lovely to do nice things for yourself that make this roller coaster ride called life more fun!

Good self-care ranges from eating healthily, getting plenty of rest and exercising regularly, to participating in your hobbies, indulging yourself with treats such as pamper sessions and time alone or with the ones you love, and doing things that make you laugh.

Some questions to ask yourself to help you identify how you’d like to start caring for yourself include:

  • What makes me happy?
  • What makes me smile?
  • What do I look forward to doing?
  • How can I relax?
  • How can I look after my emotional wellbeing?
  • How can I look after my mental wellbeing?
  • How can I look after my physical wellbeing?

In order to make your self-care a priority, habit and part of your routine, take some time to think about it. Make a list of the things that you would like to be doing for yourself but aren’t, and schedule in time daily, weekly and monthly to do them so that you are becoming accountable to yourself to do them for you.

Sometimes we find it hard to justify looking after ourselves. We might feel guilty, unworthy or that we aren’t a priority, but, if you do take time for yourself, you’ll have a better relationship with yourself and with others. So, if you can’t quite muster the oomph to look after yourself for you, then look after yourself for the one’s you love.
