Everyone Active, on behalf of Ealing Council, are delivering the Exercise Referral Scheme at Everyone Active Acton Centre. This is a 12-week gym-based programme which offers support and advice to help people increase their physical activity levels, safely and effectively.
The Exercise Referral Scheme is for Ealing residents aged over 16 years, who are registered with a GP in the borough and have a pre-existing medical condition that would benefit from exercise. In order to be referred, residents need to speak to a GP or Practice Nurse to find out if the programme is appropriate for them and if so fill out a referral form.
Conditions eligible for referral include;
The programme is designed to meet the individual’s needs, and will be tailored to their ability level. Activities could include gym based exercise, light circuit training, gentle group exercise classes, swimming and walking. Support and advice will be given from the friendly Everyone Active exercise referral qualified instructors, in order to help increase participants’ fitness levels.
Leigh Hayes was referred to the Exercise Referral Scheme by her GP because of her weight, high blood pressure and low moods. Although initially apprehensive about going to the gym, the friendly and supportive Everyone Active staff helped Leigh to get used to the machines and build up her confidence. Austin Lumley, the GP Referral Manager, created a tailored programme of activities and offered advice based on her health problems.
Six months on, Leigh has lost over six stone, reducing her blood pressure and body fat percentage, and feels like a different person.
“I feel more confident now, and my mood is so much better,” says Leigh. “I enjoy my workouts, and leave the gym feeling positive and happy. The Everyone Active staff at Acton Centre have been fantastic- nothing is too much trouble, and it’s a lovely friendly atmosphere, not intimidating at all.”
Leigh has overhauled her diet as well, and is eating healthier and currently training for a 5k race in the summer.
“I never thought that I would enjoy the experience of getting fitter, I’ve quite surprised myself,” says Leigh. “I now attend Everyone Active Acton Centre five days a week using the gym equipment and attending circuits and aerobics classes. I would definitely recommend the GP referral scheme – the team help you to work at your own pace, and are always available for questions and advice. It’s really transformed my life.”
“We are very excited to be offering the Exercise Referral Scheme at the Everyone Active Acton Centre,” says Michael Twiggins, Everyone Active General Manager. “We hope it will help local residents in need of this service feel healthier, more confident and bring an improved sense of wellbeing.”
Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for transport, environment and leisure, said: “Exercise can make an enormous difference to your life expectancy and both physical and mental health. I’m delighted that we’ve been able to work with Everyone Active to offer this subsidised exercise scheme helping residents have better quality, longer and active lives.”
The Exercise Referral Scheme gym sessions are subsidised – referred clients are required to attend at least two sessions a week for 12 weeks. On successful completion of the scheme discounted membership offers are available to continue participation.
