Local leisure centre celebrates six month success

Scarborough Sports Village which is managed by Everyone Active in partnership with Scarborough Borough Council is celebrating six months since opening its door to the local community for the first time on 5th June.

Everyone Active aims to encourage the local community to lead a more active lifestyle by delivering improved leisure facilities in the areas it operates in. Since its opening nearly 200,000 visits have been made to the centre. This is an increase of more than 80,000 visits compared with the previous year at the two old leisure sites, which the new centre replaced.

With more than 2,000 members, the local community is feeling the benefits of increased physical activity by partaking in the wide-range of activities available in centre. Paula Johnson who is a member at the centre commented: “Scarborough has been waiting a long time for this, and Everyone Active and Scarborough Borough Council have done a superb job with the Scarborough Sports Village.”

Scarborough Borough Council invested £15million into the Sports Village. Its wide range of state-of-the-art facilities include a 25-metre, eight lane Olympic Legacy swimming pool, a four-court sports hall, a multi-activity room, an impressive fitness suite and a community football stadium with 3G pitch, recently named Flamingo Land Stadium.

The leisure operator was named Swim England’s facility operator of the year in November at an annual awards ceremony, and it is the seventh time that Everyone Active has received this accolade. Colleagues deliver Swim England accredited lessons to more than 800 children and adults each week to help teach more people from across the borough this life saving skill.

Martin Russell, Everyone Active’s Area Contract Fitness Manager, said: “We are delighted that we are celebrating six months since opening this fantastic facility to the public. It is truly inspiring that the local community have visited the centre nearly 200,000 times in a bid to leading healthier, more active lifestyles.

“It is our goal to encourage the local community to improve their health and wellbeing and I would encourage anyone looking to lead a more active lifestyle to visit the Sports Village and speak to colleagues to see how we can support them on their fitness journey.”

Cllr Andrew Jenkinson, Scarborough Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism and Culture said: “It has been brilliant to see the huge difference Scarborough Sports Village has made in such a short space of time. From the increase in physical activity among people of all ages in our communities, to the football talent and community spirit being nurtured in the new football stadium, we are proud of what we have delivered in partnership with Everyone Active.”
