Local children are being invited to make a splash alongside Olympic swimmers at an event which aims to get more young people active in water.
Leading Australian swimming brand, Zoggs, is joining forces with Everyone Active to host two ‘Oceans of Fun’ events at Lammas Leisure Centre and Hucknall Leisure Centre on Sunday 22 January.
Children aged between 7–14 years old are invited to take part in the event, where they will be joined by Commonwealth gold medallist, James Goddard, Team GB water polo captain, Craig Figes, and Olympic synchronized swimmer, Vicki Lucass, to enjoy a range of water-based activities
The children will get to learn a number of new aquatic skills, such as water polo, fast swimming and synchronised swimming. Each discipline will be led by one of the expert athletes, and participants will also be given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to race the Olympians at the end of each session.
The events will take place at Lammas Leisure Centre from 9am until 11.30am and at Hucknall Leisure Centre from 1pm to 3.30pm. Any child taking part must be able to swim a minimum of 25 metres unaided. Due to limited spaces on the day, parents are advised to book children onto the free sessions by calling the centres ahead of the event.
Zoggs prides itself on its passion for swimming and hosts the Oceans of Fun events as a way of inspiring more young people to get involved with aquatic sport.
Peter Doyle, Zoggs UK General Manager, said: “By teaming up with Everyone Active, we are continuing to introduce aquatic sports and activities that many children would not have had the chance to experience.
“We hope to not only inspire and educate everyone who comes along, but show them just how much fun the pool can be. The success of these events are exemplified with the children enjoying the freedom and fun swimming and aquatic sports can bring.”
Everyone Active was recently named Facility Operator of the Year at the annual ASA Swimtastic Awards. The accolade was given in recognition of the sports and leisure provider’s efforts to engage more young people in water-based activity. Its award-winning Learn to Swim programme is delivered across more than 80 sites nationwide and teaches in excess of 138,000 students valuable swimming skills every week.
Richard Chatwin, contract manager for Everyone Active, said: “We are very excited to be hosting these ‘Oceans of Fun’ events – it is a fantastic initiative which allows young swimmers to improve their skills in the water as well as try out a range of different sports and hopefully find one they love.
“Both centres have impressive swimming facilities available, and we’re delighted to be able to offer this exciting opportunity for participants to be taught by Olympic competitors. It’s important we invest in the next generation of athletes and an event like this might inspire a future Olympic champion to achieve their dreams.”
Cllr. Jim Aspinall, Ashfield District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing, said: “Ashfield is already home to some brilliant Olympic swimmers and it is marvellous that youngsters will be able to draw on that legacy and enjoy these top-quality events.
“We have some brilliant facilities in the district and it is good to see them being used to inspire and motivate young people to be safe and active in the water.”
