Silksworth Sports Complex and Ski Slope to host All England Dry Slope Ski Racing Championships this August

Sunderland’s Silksworth Sports Complex and Ski Slope is set to host the All England Dry Slope Ski Racing Championships this August, which will see top ski racers from across the country battle it out for supremacy.

The Championships, organised by Snowsport England and sponsored by Ski Racing Supplies, will take place on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 August, and as well as showcasing the rising talents of skiing in the UK, there will also be a chance for those who have never skied or snowboarded before to give it a go for just £5 on the Saturday.

The taster sessions, which will run throughout the weekend on the nursery slope, are part of Snowsport England’s national participation campaign GO SKI GO BOARD, aimed at getting more people into skiing and snowboarding.

The ski and snowboard taster sessions, which will run on the hour between 10am and 5pm lasting an hour each, can be booked in advance by calling the centre on 03330 050153, or by turning up on the day. Fully qualified instructors will teach people the basics of either skiing or snowboarding and if people catch the bug, special beginner package offers are available on the day. Long sleeved tops and trousers must be worn.

For those interested in watching the racing action, the All England Championships kick off at 11am on Saturday and 10.30am on Sunday. Saturday will see the All England Championships Slalom, as well as the Under 10s and Under 12s race. Sunday is the Inter-Club Parallel Team Event and Open Parallel Team event. Prize giving will take place at 4.25pm on Saturday and 4.15pm on Sunday.

This is the first year that the centre, which is managed by sports and leisure operator Everyone Active, on behalf of Sunderland City Council, has hosted the event. The Ravens Ski Racing Club, which is based at the centre, is set to have several of its athletes competing in the event.

Ian Bradgate, Everyone Active’s contract manager, said: “We’re delighted to be hosting this year’s competition at Silksworth Sports Complex and Ski Slope. It’s a huge event for snow sport and we feel honoured to be a part of it.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing the Ravens competing too and we wish them all the best of luck for the event.”

Skiing and snowboarding is a great alternative summer activity in the UK, and a great opportunity to learn something new. For more information about the GO SKI GO BOARD taster sessions visit www.goskigoboard.org.uk
