Tinside Lido makes a splash during record-breaking summer

Temperatures aren’t the only thing to have hit a high this summer, as one of Plymouth’s best-loved attractions also celebrates a record-breaking season.

Tinside Lido has hosted 35,000 visits since opening its doors in May, marking a record year for the facility. Mount Wise Swimming Pools have also experienced unprecedented success, with 40,000 visitors flooding through the doors.

Thanks to Tinside, Plymouth Hoe’s iconic views out to the Channel are also a regular feature on BBC One. The Lido was used as the location for one its idents – the short video clips often shown between programmes. A steel band can be seen playing in front of the pool with background shots of boats in the Channel.

Both Tinside Lido and Mount Wise Swimming Pools, which are managed by Everyone Active on behalf of Plymouth City Council, closed their doors on Sunday (9 September) in anticipation of autumn’s cooler weather. They will reopen in May 2019.

“It has been a phenomenal year for our outdoor pools in Plymouth, and I am delighted that so many people have made use of these fantastic facilities. The weather has played a part in encouraging people to come down, but the volume of visits is testament to just how popular these pools continue to be. They can be enjoyed throughout the summer months in all weather, and they are a huge asset to the city. We look forward to trying to match this success next year.”

Tinside Lido is located at the tip of Plymouth Hoe. As a Grade II listed building with colourful Art Deco-style features, it is an iconic landmark in the city and one of only a handful of its kind in the country. It has been voted as one of the top 10 outdoor pools in Europe, with swimmers and sunbathers travelling from all over the country to enjoy its unique facilities.

As well as being a venue for people to take part in aquatic activities, Tinside has also hosted a number of outdoor cinemas throughout the summer months.

“It’s been great to see so many people flocking to our outdoor pools this summer. We’ve been blessed with some beautiful weather and both Tinside and Mount Wise are perfect spots to stay cool, enjoy the sunshine and take in our spectacular waterfront.”
