Middlesbrough Football Stars help officially open brand new 3g pitches

On Tuesday (10th October) Middlesbrough FC players, Ashley Fletcher and Fábio da Silva, along with 300 local children helped to officially open the brand new 3g pitches at a local leisure centre.

Ashley and Fabio officially opened the six brand new 3g five-a-side pitches at Middlesbrough Sports Village with a ribbon cutting. The football stars then took time to meet more than 300 children from across the borough, before they began a training session on the new pitches.

Everyone Active in partnership with Middlesbrough Council has invested £330,000 to further progress the football development programme at Middlesbrough Sports Village and provide even more opportunities for the local community.

The brand six additional five-a-side 3g pitches opened to the public on 1st September, adding to the centre’s existing four five-a-side and four seven-a-side pitches.

Since opening, the brand new 3g pitches have helped to significantly increase participation, as Everyone Active has introduced an additional 24 grass roots under 13s football teams, enabling a further 220 children from across the borough to begin playing the sport.

“I am delighted that Fabio and Ashley were able to come down to the Middlesbrough Sports Village to officially open the 3g pitches here at the centre. All of the children were over the moon to meet their football heroes. Our main objective at the centre is to encourage sport development and I am delighted that we have been able to introduce an additional 24 grass roots football teams to the borough. We will be introducing walking football sessions early next year to create even more opportunities for people across Middlesbrough to become more active.”

Paul Ayre, Everyone Active’s Contract Manager

“Middlesbrough Sports Village is really setting the pace for leisure provision in the region, and these new pitches are a fantastic addition to a state-of-the-art facility. “They will help more people of all ages and abilities get involved, and it was particularly fitting that so many young people got to meet their footballing heroes at the launch.”
