Swimming Reopening Measures

We understand the most recent Government announcement may have caused some confusion over whether leisure centres are affected by the new guidance. We’re pleased to say they are exempt, and we are continuing to impose strict measures for the safety of our customers and colleagues.

Rest assured, the latest guidance applies only to social gatherings and requires you to not meet with people from other households in groups of more than six. Full details can be on the Government Social Distancing Guidelines. If there are any changes to guidance that affects the opening or operation of our centres, we will of course let you know immediately. Full details on our reopening measures can be found on this page.

We will be continually updating the list of sites that are opening. To see the list click, sites open near me.

We’ve been working hard to ensure our centres remain a safe environment for all when they reopen.  Below are details for the measures we are taking specifically to certain facilities/activities within them.

Please be aware, not all of the below facilities may reopen at your local leisure centre in the first instance – this is dependent on the specific plans that have been agreed with your local authority.

Please ensure you read this information thoroughly before visiting the centre. All the measures detailed below are based on government guidance and our own risk assessments.

The reopening of our swimming pools

Like our gyms and studios, we hope to be able to reopen our pools as soon as possible. Again, due to ongoing discussions with our local authority partners, the dates for reopening may vary from centre-to-centre.

As I’m sure you can appreciate, we’ve had to adapt various elements of our pools due to the current circumstances and to protect the safety of our customers and colleagues.

Initially, we will only be running swimming lessons, lane swimming and club sessions within the pools, so we can control and maintain social distancing. Please read the following information, which includes specific detail on how this will be managed:

Swimming lessons

  • The general measures will apply as well as the below measures.
  • We will run fewer lessons within the pool at one time to allow for both children and swimming teachers to social distance. This may affect the times we are able to offer customers
  • Lesson times will be staggered, so there will be fewer classes starting and finishing at the same time
  • No other activities will take place in the same pool when lessons are on. This will create the additional space that will be required to accommodate lessons and maintain social distancing requirements
  • On arriving, there will be a one-way system in place, directing you and your child to the lesson
  • Only one parent should attend with a child, to reduce the number of people in the building
  • Where possible, we ask pupils to attend lessons readily changed in their costumes. This will avoid the need to use the changing rooms prior to the lesson starting
  • Swim Teachers will be required to teach from the poolside and maintain social distancing from pupils at all times
  • All pre-school stage 1 children will be required to wear arm discs
  • Parents may be asked to attend lessons in the water with younger children (only one parent, per child)

Lane swimming

  • The general measures will apply as well as the below measures.
  • Lane swimming will operate in double-width lanes and bather loads will be reduced. Capacity will be based on Swim England guidance and will be continually reviewed
  • All sessions must be booked online in advance – either through the website or app – so capacities can be managed
  • Swimmers must be able to swim lengths continually, this includes junior swimmers
  • Sessions will be a maximum of 50-minutes long to allow cleaning of changing facilities
  • Where possible, we ask customers to arrive readily changed for the pool

Ensure you swim in the correct Lane, details of each lane are shown below:

  • Fast Lane– customer will spend most of their session swimming front crawl, and on average will complete 25 metres in under 30 seconds
  • Medium Lane this lane will be for customers who undertake a variety of strokes and will regularly complete 25 metres in 30-45 seconds
  • Slow Lane– customer is likely to do the majority of swimming breaststroke, and likely to take over 45 seconds to complete 25 metres

Lane swimming etiquette

People of different standards and abilities will be using the pool. Please respect their right to enjoy their swim. Before attending please familiarise yourself with the below rules for lane swimming sessions:

  • Follow the one-way system around the poolside.
  • Use the lane you have booked – slow, medium or fast.
  • Enter and exit the pool as directed.
  • Follow the directional signs and move across to the appropriate side of the lane for each length.
  • Please do not overtake whilst swimming. Before pushing off at each turn, check to see if anyone faster is approaching.
  • Always attempt to maintain appropriate social distance between yourself and another swimmer.
  • Do not make physical contact with other users.
  • Wide strokes such as butterfly should be avoided when the lanes are busy.
  • Whether stopping for a rest or catching your breath after completing your swim, please be mindful that others using the lane will want to keep swimming without stopping. Keep yourself to the edge of the lane allowing others to turn at the wall, turning your head away and allowing others to maintain social distancing measures.
  • If you need a longer rest, please exit the pool and use the designated area on poolside.
  • Participants are asked to bring their own equipment, eg. Kickboards, pull buoys, training snorkels and short fins.

The lifeguards are here for everyone’s safety. If they ask you to adhere to the above guidance, your co-operation would be appreciated.
