A major project will begin this summer to decarbonise and modernise three North Herts leisure centres, making them more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly for the future.
The £15.89 million project – part-funded by £7.74 million from the government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme – will bring significant upgrades to:
- North Herts Leisure Centre, Letchworth
- Hitchin Swimming and Fitness Centre
- Royston Leisure Centre
What’s changing?
To reduce carbon emissions and improve energy performance, works will include:
- Replacing gas boilers with air source heat pumps
- Installing solar panels
- Upgrading insulation, glazing and air handling systems
- Introducing energy-efficient technologies across all buildings
These changes are expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by over 60%, with further reductions anticipated as the electricity grid continues to decarbonise.
Facility improvements
In addition to sustainability upgrades, the project will deliver improved facilities for customers, including:
- Royston Leisure Centre: New gym extension and refurbished changing village
- North Herts Leisure Centre: New flume and modernised changing village
- Hitchin Swimming and Fitness Centre: Refurbished health suite and gym changing rooms
What to expect during works
Some temporary service changes will be necessary while the work takes place. This includes a partial weekday pool closure at Hitchin for around five months. To help maintain swimming access, the lido season will be extended at both Hitchin and Letchworth.
Work is due to begin this summer and is expected to complete by spring 2026. Further updates and confirmed timescales will be shared as soon as available.
We thank all customers for their support and patience while these vital improvements are carried out.
