Gym Refurbishment

The University of Derby will begin an overhaul and refurbishment of its Sports Centre gym in July of this year.

Following an extensive process, Matrix Fitness, who currently have equipment in our gym, have been chosen as the preferred supplier for our new gym equipment.

This will be a welcome investment to the Student Experience following the last equipment development nearly eight years ago.

“Equipment that will cater to members at all ends of the performance spectrum, which is really easy to use, non-intimidating but yet challenging and durable enough for the most elite of athlete.”

“The space will see exciting developments such as the doubling of squat racks, additional pieces of equipment in high use weights, new plate loaded equipment, Theragun recovery area, and equipment that interacts with your wearable technology.”

Simon Law, Interim Deputy Director of Sport.

As part of the project Everyone Active, our gym service provider, are supporting the refurbishment which will see new flooring, colour scheme, and sound system.

Essential works will commence on July 10th through to August 7th 2023.  Current members will be able to use Moorways Sports Centre during closure. We welcome members back from the 8th of August 2023.

In September Sport and Physical Activity team are planning to formally launch a new sports framework in tandem with official opening of the new gym. This framework represents the culmination of a year of collaboration between the Union of Students, School of Human Sciences, and Sport and Physical Activity team.

The framework will focus on getting more students and staff active, supporting the next generation of student athletes, and development of a sport workforce that support applied practise opportunities as well as volunteering to support our community.

“The refurbished gym is going to be a wonderful facility that will really enhance the fitness offering at the University of Derby Sports Centre. “We are confident the state-of-the-art upgrades are going to be a big hit with gym users, no matter what their fitness level.

“We will of course keep members updated as work progresses.”

Dan Mclean, Everyone Active Contract Manager
