Athletics consists of four main strands: track events like the 100 metres and other running disciplines, field events such as the high jump and shot-put, combined events like the decathlon, and road events including the marathon.
Each event brings its own fitness demands and benefits. Running events will help to develop your cardiovascular fitness, while throwing and jumping events will improve your explosive power. Winter athletics involves circuit training, which will increase your all-round fitness and help tone your whole body.
