EVENTS AT WINCHESTER SPORT & LEISURE PARK

Winchester Sport & Leisure Park are very proud to host and be involved in numerous events and bookings across the year. All with the aim to encourage and promote fitness and sports.

Hampshire School Games – June 2023

Hampshire School Games Week (HSGW) provides a chance for schools to celebrate all aspects of PE, School Sport and Physical Activity. The School Games Organisers and Energise Me provides every school that signs up with a programme of activities and free resources. The Hampshire School Games ‘Competition’ Day is hosted across a couple of venues including Winchester Sport & Leisure Park, Winchester University Sports Stadium and KGV Sports Pitches.

This Festival is targeted at young people, those in years 4, 5 & 6, not already engaged in clubs outside of school or school teams. Throughout the day the schools are provided with an opportunity to try 4 of the 30 activities being provided. With around 1,300 pupils from schools across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight in attendance, plus teachers and volunteers

This year WSLP hosted several activities including Climbing, Water Polo, Rookie Lifeguarding, Fun Swimming, Squash, Trampolining, Basketball, Boxing, Karate, Dance, African Drumming, Boccia & New Age Kurling.

A fantastic day to be a part of the whole festival provides a positive, uplifting experience of sport and physical activity and takes the chase to showcase the wide range of opportunities available beyond school sport.

Paralympic Personal Bests – September 2022

In 2012, Winchester City Council, in partnership with Everyone Active, Winchester Go LD and the University of Winchester used the London Paralympic Games as a platform to get more disabled children and adults active by organising a day full of sports activities for them to try. Since then, we have ensured this is an annual event and since opening Winchester Sport & Leisure Park has hosted.

Now into its eleventh year, the ‘Paralympic Personal Bests’ brings children and adults with a wide range of physical and learning disabilities together to take part in various sports activities and compete against their own ability to achieve their ‘personal best’. From 33 participants in 2012, we now attract over 150 people from the Winchester district and surrounding areas.

The overall aim of the event is to bring together children and adults with physical and learning disabilities to take part in sport and encourage and enable ongoing participation in sport and physical activity on a regular basis.

  • To provide an opportunity for participants to take part in a range of sporting activities.
  • To ensure all participants gain a sense of achievement and recognition.
  • To promote/ raise awareness of disability sport.
  • To signpost participants to further opportunities.
  • To provide connections, network and information sharing between support providers, schools, and other services that support people with disabilities.
  • To promote healthy lifestyles.

Big Splash

In 2022 we celebrated an open day event with Olympic athletes present to celebrate our one-year anniversary since opening. Organized by Everyone Active and Winchester City Council, Winchester Sport & Leisure Park had over 2000 people through the doors for our Big Splash event!

With numerous activities on offer across the weekend including public lane and family swimming, synchronised swimming, a ‘Rookie Lifeguard’ course and ‘dive and glide’ sessions, group fitness and cycling classes, access to the gym, top rock, squash, martial arts, pool inflatables, bouncy castle, racket sports, and freestyle football hosted by Jamie Knight.

A total of 93 children, from 43 schools, clubs and the Everyone Active Swim Lesson Programme enjoyed the Big Splash with former Olympic athlete, Rebecca Adlington OBE, Commonwealth medallist and synchronised swimmer, Adele Carlsen, London 2012 Olympian and synchronised swimmer, Kate Skelton, British water polo goalkeeper Matt Holland, and British record holder and former Olympian in freestyle swimming, Grant Turner headlining the poolside activities.

Over 50s Racket Games

Winchester Fitness and Sports Club challenged Woking Sports Club to several short tennis and badminton matches in January 2023. The games were hosted by Winchester Sport & Leisure Park involving men, ladies and mixed pairs in the age group of 50 – 99 years old! The hope is that the tournament may be the start of more friendly tournaments with other sports clubs in the future.

Varsity

In March 2023 Winchester Sport and Leisure Park helped the University of Winchester to host Varsity for the first time! Varsity is an annual sports competition where Winchester University students go head-to-head to compete against University of Chichester students.

At Winchester Sport and Leisure Park, we hosted numerous sports including Netball, Basketball, Badminton, Volleyball, Swimming and Cheerleading.

A huge well done to all who took part, especially to the University of Winchester for once again coming out on top!
