Can I just do cardio to lose weight?

Cardio is a great way to exercise for overall health benefits and will support your weight loss efforts. However, to speed up weight loss and maintain the weight you have lost its important to do some form of resistance exercise.

Put simply; to maximise calorie burn (burn fat) you need muscle.

The more muscle you have the higher your metabolism becomes.  Metabolism is the way your body processes what you consume to create fuel for the body to function.  The quicker and more efficiently your body can do this the more calories your body burns at rest and during exercise.

This doesn’t mean you have to hit the weights everyday to look like Arnie to get your results!

Try to include some weights as part of your gym session or try some body weight exercises such as press ups, crunches and lunges.  If you’re not confident using weights in the gym why not consider classes such as Body Pump, circuits and conditioning classes.  The instructors are there to guide and advise you on techniques, suitable weights and exercise order for safe and effect results.

Remember exercise plays a big part in weight loss and maintaining a good weight but only when combined with a healthy diet.
